bio
A self-taught artist who works largely outside of the art world.
Sabhan Adam’s images of malformed creatures, typically dressed in glamorous apparel against plain backgrounds, challenge notions of beauty and ugliness. While the figures are twisted and grotesque, they express a deep range of emotions based on Adam’s own psychology. He claims that the figures he paints share so many characteristics with him that they resemble him from head shape to eyes. He went on to say: “I draw myself with everything that exists inside ¬- the sadness, the misery, the shocking things I have faced, the isolation, and the feeling of not belonging to this world.
His work has been acquired by the British Museum, Jalanbo Collection, Barjeel Art Foundation, and several individual collectors.
